I have a 99 Ranger with a manual 5 speed transmission that seems to slip when I accelerate suddenly or try to take off quickly . I just towed a U-Haul trailer from Las Vegas to Philadelphia, which I attribute to the cause. That is the only symptom. My question is: How bad is it? Will it need a complete rebuild?
You probably glazed your clutch with the load. Take it easy and don't let it slip for a day or two. It might lose the glaze and go back to "normal". If not, it's new clutch time. A manual tranny won't slip unless it's broke in which case it won't even move and/or you will hear terrible noises and see parts and oil flying.
I say try to wait it out because I had a guy smoke, and I mean smoke the clutch on my '65 Mustang. He was trying to light the tires but was starting in 2nd or 3rd instead of 1st. (3 on floor) I could barely make the car move, the clutch slipped so bad. Any throttle and it would slip. The next day after it cooled off, and I ran it a day or two, it hooked up again and went quite a few more miles. Hope you are that lucky.
