Mazda tranny

Hey I was told that the mazda tranny in the ranger and the f150 are the same ones and that the parts are interchangeable. Is that true?

The one on the Ranger is a model M5R1 while the F-series is an M5R2. Don't know if they are interchangeable but the M5R2 is supposedly a heavier duty version of the M5R1.

Ingramo- I have a 1991 f-150 with the mazda tranny. my tranny is called a M5OD tranny. I dont know if the trannies that N578MD was listing are like mine or not but i do know that they are very similar but that the oned in the F-series are built with a heavier duty gearing system. But as far as them being interchangeable i dont know. If I had a ranger i would maybe see if a f-series model would fit but i definately would not go and try to get parts from a ranger tranny to fit for a F-series . I would think that it would not hold up. My M50d is original with 250,000 miles with a clutch done recently. It makes a little growling noise everynow and then but with that many miles I would expect it to.

Hey Crossf-150. I'm getting ready to put in a new clutch myself. There isn't much "engagment" left. My clutch seams to grab all at once. Was yours doing the same? Anyway, I have been looking at parts and can't decide what way to go. Ford brand parts or some other brand. Also, did you have to replace the whole system or just the plate and disk?

I have never done this before so just trying to get some good info before I dig in. Oh yea, how long did it take you?

A flat NO. The trannies have a lot in common and are pretty much the same design. They even look alike, internally and externally. But, the Ranger version is much smaller and designed for lighter duty use behind a less powerful engine. Besides the fact that the small version has a bellhousing size and pattern to mate to very different engines.

i do belive if you use the ranger bell houseing you can put the f150 m5od in there though.

Bell houseing makes all the difference. =)

94ford- My clutch was doing the same . It was shot hardly any clutch left. It was grabbing all at once. I did have some trouble shifting I was starting to have to double clutch it. I went and did the clutch and did the whole thing. Pressure Plate, clutch, throw out bearing. the whole thing. I even went ahead and changed the fluid. Its running good and for having 250,000 miles and running quite well. I used an aftermarket kit. It was a Borg Warner Kit. Ford Brand parts you pay a lot of money for something that an aftermarket kit will fulfill to the max. Good luck man.

Except for the fact that these trannies have integral bellhousings. There's no separate piece to unbolt. Crawl under your truck and take a look. You cannot swap these trannies between different series of blocks and the Ranger version is smaller, lighter and weaker. There may be some service parts that interchange, but i wouldn't hazard as guess as to what they are.

always replace all components at once, disc plate , throw out, every thing. its cheaper to buy the whole kit that seperate parts . good luck
