Desert Racing Info From BSC Racing
Thanks for the response. My son and I have always loved riding dirt bikes, both MX and in the desert. BSC Racing races a KTM 4 stroke in some of the Best In The Desert series, which are mostly run in Nevada, with one run in Parker, Arizona. Check out their web site at www.bitd.com Both Nevada and Arizona are full of old Ford pickups, still used daily and not subject to the rust problems found elsewhere. Also, the old truck prices, especially in Nevada, are much more reasonable than in California.
The most well known offroad racing series is put on by SCORE. These are the famous Baja races, including the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and San Filipe 250. They also run races in Nevada. You can check out their schedule and lots of good info and pictures at www.score-international.com
Another excellent web site for desert racing, with special sections on Ford trucks, 4X4, quads, etc. is www.off-road.com
The best part of desert racing is that you need a unique, fully capable desert racing-type vehicle to prerun the race course in the week(s) before the race. In most cases, this vehicle is also street licensed, like my 1969 F100. This is a perfect excuse to get together with other off road obsessed people, without the pressure of race day, and tear down the race course, making note of the obstacles and danger points, stopping occasionally for a little bench racing and refreshment.
Prerunning in Nevada is good, but in Baja it is even better. There you combine: no government ***** telling you what to do, friendly locals, excellent and cheap local food, beautiful beaches, cheap accomodations (camping or hotels) and cold cerveza.
Take care, John / BSC Racing
