I've Always Had Foreign Cars (CAMRY, HONDA PRELUDE, ETC.)
My Prelude Had Been Losing Power Over The Past 7-10 Days . . .
I Thought It Might Be Fuel Injectors, However, I Have Now Deduced That It's My Transmission And Clutch . . .
Last Night My Prelude DIED !
Engine Will Engage, But Seems As If It Is Not Even Connected To The Transmission . . .
SO, WE ARE SELLING / SCRAPPING / PARTING OUT . . .
I'VE DONE A BIT OF RESEARCH ON THIS SERIES AND LOVE IT !
HOWEVER, I'D TAKE EVEN MORE PLEASURE IN CURRENT OWNERS WOOING ME WITH TALES OF SVT LIGHTNINGS, V8 EFIs AND THE FLEXING POWER OF GOOD OLD AMERICAN MUSCLE . . .
ALSO . . .
AS I'M A REALIST . . .
(IF THERE ARE ANY) WHAT PROBLEMS ARE COMMON, WHAT PREVENTITVE MAINTENANCE SHOULD BE DONE ?
HOW LONG HAVE YOUR TIMING CHAINS LASTED ?
ANY PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLING AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS SUCH AS 'FLOWMASTERS' OR 'BASSANI' EXHAUST SYSTEMS ?
Welcome to the forum
I have never heard of a failed timing chain on the modular engines as of yet.
No problems with my Flowmaster or K&N filter.
I would suggest a 2000 or newer because they are a bit more refined and had most of the bugs worked out.
You can't beat the sound of a rumbling American V8 and the power is great
There is no sound like a v8, and no subsitute for cubic inches. I have not replaced a time chain since 1988 on a 1978 LTD
I have owned toyota car, and fit and finish is no where near any of my 5 fords. I have a 95 explorer with 160K, a 2000 expedition with 90K and a powerstroke deisel with 100K with no problems out of any. Now, if your used to the small v5 or 4 in a honda, etc. dont get the powerstroke !!
Well, the 4.2L V6 is a nice motor despite its small side. for under 9k you can prolly pick up and reg cab 2x4 without many if any options other than motor size. I cannot recollect any serious or continuos problems with any of the 1/2 ton Fords since the problem with the 98 4.2s....read more about leaking fords in many threads on this site....that problem has since been resolved and they tend to be very good and reliable trucks....I might add, a reg cab 2x4 4.2L V6 with a 5 spd STOCK can beat any stock ford 1/2 otehr than a lightining and the 2002 and up harley fords
I have a 4.6L and a 22ft cimmarron boat on a brand new aluminum trailer and it is all that truck can do to pull it. I sold ford trucks for two years and the literature they make us read says the 4.2L has more torgue that the 4.6L. Do you feel 4.6L stronger because I have to put the truck in overdrive to get the whole package moving? I would really like to hook this boat up to the 4.2L and see. I am getting ready to a Fullsize BRONCO to pull it.
the f-150 best selling model in usa, lots of after market stuff, stock replacements readly avaible, loyal following, and best of all this forum. shouldn't be such a hard choice just keep reading here.
Camille makes a good point about aftermarket performance stuff. Along with a microtuner, intake and exhaust, I put 4.10 gears in my 1999 F150 4.6. I now have no problem pulling my Boston Whaler. It even goes well up steep hills.
Hi & welcome! I have a 97 4x4 w/the 4.6. I LOVE it. I'm over 100K miles - all I ever replaced was the starter recently (beaten up a bit from off roading!), the + battery cable (same reason I think) & 2 u joints. The prev owner replaced the radio & tie rods - I guess he off roaded too!
I'd definitely reccomend this truck - went from an 85 Camry to the truck & I had no problems or regrets.
I see you're from OH. Join your state Chapter & watch for get togethers they're planning. Then you can meet with them, see the trucks in person & talk to the owners & get their feedback. It's free to join the Chapter - tell 'em Cowlady sent you! We're hoping to have a multi state meet this summer so maybe you can be there & meet even more members!
Good luck with your truck hunting!
