Thanks for the info. Our mechanic thinks that the EGR valve on the V10 causes it to ping when just cruising along. He doesn't think that it is anything to be worried about but it is a little nerve-wracking to listen to. I have had two-stroke quads my whole life and when they ping like this you know it's time for a new piston.

I was also told the EGR valve by the dealer but I had it replaced at the dealer and no improvement? I still have the pinging problem. My next step is to replace the Y pipe, I have done everything else that had been mentioned on the forum and no change in the condition.

Side note: I have always ran 91 octane so that is not always the fix.

I will keep you all posted once the Y pipe is installed as I am sure most of you are as frustrated as I am with this. A freind of mine who designed the V10 swears to me that it is definitly the Y pipe so I guess I will have to appease him and replace it, but I really don't think that is the fix either but we will soon know.

RV puller also mentioned Th Y pipe below and it seemed to have fix his flutter problem. Thanks for the great info RV Puller

Gentelmen, all 99 and up SuperDuty V10 PCM and engine systems have several processes to manage emmissions and lean burn. Part of the system is a Knock Sensor that can detect pre-ignition (ping) and take steps to eliminate it. If your system is working correctly, you MAY notice a slight short lived ping under load that should go away. If it is severe the PCM will richen the mixture and retard the timing and you WILL notice the reduced power.

I bet what most of you hear are some of the unique noises the 99-02 V10 were prone to produce. Exhaust Flutter, exhaust shields, tin bellhousing plate, drive line harmonics, these are all annoying and sometimes hard to track down.

If you really do have pre-ignition problems the trouble shooting is easy. Fill up with highest grade available, dirve the same conditions that cause it to happen with 87 RON. If it goes away, then trouble shoot why 87 doesn't run without detonation.

If you still get the noises with high-test it is not ping, look elsewhere. There are a few high altitude heavy towing conditions that will induce ping with 87 RON. But for sea level use in cool air the motor should not need any higher octane rating than 87.

Blended and clean air fuels are not the same animal as REAL gasoline and can cause reduced power if you system is sensing the ping. Many of us step up to mid grade in the mountains or for long HOT towing.

If you are a true motor head and absolutly know what pre-ignition (ping) sounds like, and high-test is still pinging, you need motor help now!

Detonation

I just returned from a 3,000 mile trip to Glacier National Park Montana from Phoenix in my 2004 E-450 6.8 Class C motorhome. I was hearing a knocking noise at times during the trip. The noise was not present all the time. If the knocking (?) occured it was not affected by accelator pressure one way or the other. It almost sounded like marbles rolling around inside the engine compartment. The motor performed great during the trip and almost delivered 10 MPG overall ( 13800 lbs). The noise might sound different in the E-series chassis. I when under the motorhome this morning to change oil. The heat shield on the Y-pipe is tight but the dust cover in the front of the trans had a small gap in it and could be moved back and forth. Do the forum members think this noise is that dust cover? That cover is very flexable and weak....What would make this noise come and go at different times? Possibly heat or road conditions? Thanks

I tracked the pinging /marbles to my bell housing shield. I creased it to make it "stiffer" and cut some heat/sound material to that exterior shape and stuck it on and no more marbles. I did have mild exhaust flutter, and killing the shield noise made it so I could hear the flutter better. My flutter was in a very narrow rpm band so I used to just hit the OD off button and ignor it.

I will try that dust cover fix from FREDVOR4 next weekend. Did you use the heat resistant material that is alumium (spelling) covered and is about 1/2 inch thick ? I used that on the floors of my 63 Galaxie when I put new carpeting in several years ago, or did you use another product ? Thanks

I cheated and pulled down a piece of the Ford stuff under pass floor board that was not totally stuck on. I only needed a small section. Kind of rubber/foam/sticky backed aluminum faced material maybe 3/16th thick.
