Hey guys, I have a 1977 150 with a 9" rear end. It has an open diff with 2.75 gears. I am wanting to move up to 3.55 limited slip for towing. I was wondering if there is anyway of finding out what spline my axels are without pulling them. Thanks.
Jamie
No sure fire way, but a good indication would be to look at the ends of the tubes out next to the brake plate and if the tube stays big, you have the big wheel bearings and likely 31 spline axles. Look here and here too for info of interest.
I have a trailer made from a wrecked '77 F-100 2wd with 2.75 gears in it, looks like the big bearings in it. I have carried 3500 lbs stone on it OK, very low speed for only 10-12 miles.
If you have the big bearing/big housing (talking about the center section being big) axle, you probably have 31 splines. If you have the big bearing/small housing, you could have either. My Bronco has 28 splines with big bearing/small housing. If you have small housing/small bearing, you likely have 28 splines. Looking on your vin/door sticker for the rear axle weight rating could give a clue. The big bearing/big housing 31 spline axles can be rated for 3500 lbs. My Bronco axle is rated for something like 2800 lbs. The big housing center section has a more oblong center, viewed from the rear, and the small housing rear is more rounded.
My plate in the door jam rates the rear for 3480 +-, also the axel tubes do not taper they are one width from the center to the brakes. I'm assuming that I have the 31 spline axels.
I'm still looking for 3.55's and a locker cheap, so let me know if anybodies got for sale.
Thanks.
