1978 ignition switch????
and i have been having problems with the ignition lately...i got a used one from a junk yard and put it in and it had the same problem as the stock one..the problem is it gets spark to the distributor when the key turns on (not when you try to crank it over) and also when it turns off but not when you are trying to crank it over and when i put the one i bought in it worked for about 4 startsthen stopped . i have pulled the ignition modual off and put a new one on and that did not work and i think i have ran outta idea's
so if anybody out there has had or is having the same problem as me i would appreceate it..-Karl

you will find a schematic for the duraspark that might help you trouble shoot the problem. I am guessing it might be a loose or corroded pin connector in the plug in harness that goes into the switch on the "S" terminal. I haven't taken the harness apart but it sure looks like there is a joint (solder?) on the the other side of the segment of resistor wire so maybe there? GL
You are describing a classic ignition module failure. Since you have replaced yours, you may have a damaged harness. But where? It's not the ignition switch. Between the switch and the, ?,.... ignition module? There is an increased voltage signal to the coil during startup. This signal is ultimately triggered by a 12VDC signal from the ignition switch. Probably the same "S" terminal that signals the starter solenoid. Why isn't it making it to the Duraspark? Harness damage?
1. Be patient.
2. Pull the dash out and start to disect the harness from the switch to the duraspark. You will have to get a wiring schematic. Don't start with out one.
Good luck,
