I have been thinking about building up the 360 I have in my truck but I am not quite decided yet. I talked to DSC and they said I could get a 428 short block for about 3000. What all do I need to turn a short block into a running engine? I know I need a intake, carb, distributer, oil pan, and I think a timing cover. What else would I need? I am thinking about probably another 1500-2000 to get the short block running does that sound about right? I figuered that if I was gonna build this truck I might as well build it like I want. I know that the 360/390 can be a nice engine but I figured that the 428 might be better and have more room to improve power than the 360. Thanks for the help. Jake
water pump, starter, alternator, exhaust manifolds/headers, flywheel or flexplate, clutch (see previous decision process) and maybe a new harmonic balancer/dampner, maybe an oil pump and shaft. Possibly also lifters and pushrods, to go with the needed heads...
All the stuff you already own (360) and a set of gaskets will get it up and running. You can add e-bock heads or have a set of iron heads rebuilt later. But, every part on the 360 will bolt on to the 428 block.
As an FYI, I paid $3999 for my short block. It's a 428 at .020 over with a SCAT 4.125" stroker crank, Eagle BBC rods and Ross Racing custom pistons (pick your comp ratio to match your other hardware), FM Race bearings. It displaces 446 Cubes. I won't reccomened those guys (flatlander racing) , but there may be other builders that can do the same.
BTW, I think I have since spent as much or more on the remaining parts. Actually, I'm sure it's more. I guess I was thinking I was almost there with the short block, but I kept saying "Might as well".
Thanks for the help guys. I forgot about the heads. I am still trying to decided what to do, just figureing out all my options. I just like the idea of haveing a 428 in my truck, don't really know why. I thought that I could use alot of parts off from my 360 thanks for clearing that up William. Gtex what heads, intake and carb do you have on your 428. I was thinking of putting a performer intake, a Holley truck avenger carb and have some heads ported at some point. I use my truck for mainly off-road stuff so I am looking for a lot of torque. I still have a while yet before I can start buying anything, so I will probably have alot more questions. Thanks again.
For the cost of the 428 I would find another shortblock or build up a 390. The performer intake is a waste of money since its not any better than a stock 4bbl just lighter. The truck avenger carb is a good choice.
Even under the influenece of several adult beverages, I could rattle off my entire credit card number, expiration date and the "security code" from memory :-) without knowing where my wallet is!
That's spooky!
What's worse: ebay is the devil.....I may have just purchased a marine vessel....
Hell of a hobby! I am to cheap to buy a $4100 camaro z28 and you have more in your shortblock! I plan on going to college for 2.5 years and like $33,000. Parents contribution $0. Kinda bumps me since I have been wanting to buy a Fox Mustang and build up a 600hp 347 stroker with tremec 3550 tanny and all the suspension goodies. Oh well when you get a promotion you can wire some money to me and i can get started on my projects.
