Is it possible to do a rebuild on a '96 ZF trans. at home? I was told that there were $2000 of special tools. I have never rebuilt a trans., but I'm open to suggestions.
I wouldn't takle it at home unless you have a pretty well equiped garage and a good R & R manual. All the ones I built as a ford tech (2) wasn't too bad but the cost of parts adds up quick. I would look around for a good used unit or check ebay. I saw one for 1100 rebuilt with a warranty the other day.I hope this helps. Also whats wrong with yours?
when you try and start the truck in neutral it jumps forward. it stays put with the clutch in, and you can shift it into gears and it seems to pull, but it goes about 3 ft and locks up.
I would be building it at a shop, but everyone that I ask say they don't know how to even get it apart.(obvously not tranny people).
I thought that I read on this page that someone emailed the rebuild guide and suggested the rebuild himself. Can't find it again though.
My bets are on the pocket bearing inbetween the input shaft and mainshaft. I even had one on a 99 f550 that with 55000 miles locked up going down the road and cracked the case. It has a front case/intermediate case and rear case. It just comes apart. In your case you probably can get the front off and just replace the bearing, but if it damaged the front shaft or main then $$$$$ . Good luck.
