i pulled off my oil filter adapter today thinking all i would have to do was change the gaskets because water was leaking but, i guess that would be to easy. i fould that i had a hole in the water jacket above the oil filter. so, i showed it to a friend who is a sertified welder and he said he could heliarc it with aluminum and fix it. would this be a good idea? i figured i had nothing to lose since it was already broke. any recomendations or suggestions.
no way, there'd be too much residual stress in it. You'd have to heliarc it and then stress relieve it. What about drilling, tapping, and plugging it? I have no idea where you are talking about, but maybe???
i think the oil filter adapter has three sections. the rear section where the oil filter is, is leaking water because of cavitation. there is a small hole about the size of a BB right in the top of the water jacket. it ate throught to the outside of it. this hole doesnt interfere with any thing but the water portion of the rear adapter. hope fully this will give you a better idea of where the hole is.
I had the same thing happen on my 1984 E350. You better check the front end of the oil cooler too, because both of mine were corroded. We tried to weld, but could not, due to all that dirty diesel oil running through that thing for 20 years. If the hole is that small, you can probably drill and tap it (as suggested above), and make an aluminum plug to screw in and loctite in place, otherwise, you can get a complete oil cooler from a junkyard (of course, make sure it's not corroded), or buy new ends from the international dealer. The IH part number forged into the front piece is all you need to get that. However, since the rear piece is an assembly, the forged number is not the assembly number. I was able to get the IH part numbers from a Ford dealer. I also got the gaskets and o-rings from a Ford dealer. It cost me over around $425.00 for both ends, and the IH dealer gave me a big discount.
Good luck!
Thanks, i couldnt plug it because it was on the edge of the gasket surface and the assembly. i have an aircraft welder welding it for me hopefully it fixed it but, just in case i called the dealer and he told me that the rear assembly alone was 342.00. i will try international if i cant fix it this time. thank you for all of your help.
the front piece was working on corroding too so i fixed it before it got too bad. hopefully i got the rear assembly fixed. i had an aircraft welder fix it up for me HOPEFULLY.
