Hey I just bought a 91 Explorer for really cheap it has a lift and is in really good shape the only problem is the transmission. The guy said it lost all forward gears and only had reverse. So he filled up the trans with more atf and some sort of trans goo. Now it only has foward gears and even in park it feels like it is still in gear. Can anyone help point me in the direction of what to look at first?
How hard would it be to awap in a manual trans? would I have to change the computer or would it be ok to leave the one in it? I know I would have to have everything for the manual but I could find everything at a junk yard.
Transmission might need to be rebuilt/replaced. The A4LD is not considered a very strong transmission. Someone's working through a thorough "bullet-proof" rebuild on a '93 A4LD and he's documenting his progress at www.ford-trucks.com in a series of threads titled My A4LD rebuild diary. Maybe look through that and see if you feel up to tackling the rebuild.
Swapping in a manual transmission isn't unheard of, either. Main issue is getting the MT computer, which you said wasn't a big deal. Might also need to adjust the lengths of the driveshafts, I'm not sure. It might be worth considering.
Yes. On the AT, the engine management computer controls both the 3-4 shift and the torque converter lockup clutch. Of course, neither is present on the MT.
For the transmission itself, I don't think it's changed much over the years. The M5OD is pretty common behind the 4.0. For the computer, one from a '92 might work; I'm not sure. '93 on had a couple of significant changes to the engine management system to get it to work properly in your '91 (multiple O2 sensors and EGR system, for example).
