steering column moved- help!

We are putting a new steering box into our 2WD '85 F250. As we were trying to connect the steering column into the box, the whole shaft shifted UP into the cab. Now if you sit in the drivers seat, the steering wheel is in your lap, and there is about a two inch gap between the column and the box where they are supposed to meet up, and the column seems locked in place. We tried simply pulling on it, but it wont come back down where it needs to be.

Does anyone know if the steering column is supposed to telescope in any way, or if there is a way to get it to unlock and slide back down?

Does anyone have any ideas? I really need to get the truck back together and being this close is really annoying. Please help me out here.

This is only a guess, but sounds like you have a bearing out of place.
Now it is setting on the sholder of its holder.

Does the wheel move sideways or vertically when you are inside the truck?

You are working on about the only thing I have never done anything to my truck at all.

Actually, we found it, there was a telescoping section of the column that took a whole lot of wiggling to get it back down. It's funny, the thing retracted practically on it's own but took some work to come back to where it started.
