Ok I'm looking to get a dual exhaust setup for my 98 4.0 mazda. and I was looking at the gibson or the flowmaster. I'm not really to picky about how it sounds duals always sound pretty sweet. I just want to know which one is going to give me more hp/tq. Oh and I will also be getting jba headers to go with it. Which one will be the best set up with these headers? Thanks
I think Gibson makes a superior muffler. They are stainless steel and will last longer than an aluminum flowmaster. I think they flow better too so better performance.
If you check out the link in my signature, you can hear a Gibson muffler on my V8. I also have headers and a high flow Y pipe, which will make it a bit louder than your application. What kind of sound are you looking for? Gibson is one of the quitest mufflers in the market, both interior and exterior. Flowmaster, on the other hand, has quite a bit of interior resonance, and a loud tone at the tail pipe.
I chose Gibson over the Flowmaster, because I didn't like the "droan" sound the Flowmaster had in the cab at highway speeds. I am very happy with the sound, and quality of the Gibson SS CATBACK.
I chose to go with the Flowmaster muffler because I wanted to have the extra sound. I could feel a bit more torque, but that was about it. With headers, you should be able to feel quite a bit of difference though.
If you want more low-end torque and a sweet sound, check out the Hooker Aero Chambers. I have one running a single pipe on an Explorer 4.0, and it sounds great. Duals would only sound better. The increase in torque was noticeable over the stock muffler, and mpg increased between 1-2 mpg.
The Hooker uses a "stepped" chamber design similiar to the latest header designs. This increases the velocity of the exhaust pulses, therefore increasing the torque. Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler
I like the sound from the Hooker muffler but that was probably on a bigger engine to. And i like the sound from the gibson, and I'v heard flow master on my friends s10 but its a 4-banger. So far i think i'm leaning towards the Hooker muffler. anyone got a clip of one of the gibson or Hooker brands on a 4.0 v6? with or without headers.
replaced my stock muffler with a Flowmaster 40 a little over a month ago. Haven't had any droning problems and it sounds great. I was actually surprised that it was a little quieter than I hoped on my 5.4L, but a new air intake should help make it louder. =D

It takes a while but they do get louder over time. They have to be broken in and seasoned to get there full potential sound.
I hope so. It's the sweetest sound when I first start it up and punch the gas a few times, if that sound will carry over to normal driving I would be an even happier man.
How can you break a flowmaster in? its metal chambered muffler so theirs nothing that can wear out?
I don't know how, but it does. It doesn't wear out at all because these mufflers aren't packed with fiberglass. The tone just gets deeper over time, I'm guessing from the heat of the exhaust over time has an effect on the aluminum. My cousin has flowmaster on his truck and when he first put them on it wasn't as loud as it is today.
Regular mufflers can break in, but it depends on the style. For a chambered Flowmaster, its pretty tough. Some brands (like bassani) have perforated rows, that can crack, become filled, etc..which will change the tone over time.
