I have an 86 4x4 and I need another trans. (for some reason mine keeps going thru bearings) What years fit mine (Its the fm145 5 speed)? I heard it was 85-87. Thanks, Roy
I've had to replace the input and output shaft(output twice) I've also replace the fifth gear assymbly(the gears and bearing) twice. Now the trans is out again and I think the shaft that the fifth gear is on is shot. so any way thats the sad story of this trans!
How has your fluid level been? I have the Mazda trans in my Ranger, and it looks like you have the Mitsubishi based on the trans code you gave. I am not sure if the Mitsubishi suffers from the same common problem the Mazda does, bad rubber plugs cause fluid leaks. There are 3 rubber plugs near the top of the valve body by the shifter that dry rot and leak fluid while driving. This baked ALL ot the bearings in my trans when the fluid gets low. I don't have any experience with the Mitsubishi trans, hense the question.
Rangers for a while used both a mazda and mitsibishi trans. (manual) Were there others? and which is best? If I find a (I have the Mitsibishi) Mazda or other that came off a 2.9 can I use it? Mines an 86 4x4. what years are interchangable?
I don't have my manual with me, but this was a common issue for the 80's+ Rangers with a Mazda E87 trans. If you did have them they would be way up on top of the trans near the shifter. On the Mazda they sit about 3" behind where the shifter goes into the trans. They are usually replaced during a rebuild with metal freeze plugs and sealant. Since you say the fluid level is fine, I don't know that this is the case.
Is the fluid changed on a regular basis? What color is it? Have you had problems shifting from day 1? Is there a worn mount that is causing too much vibration, and premature bearing failure? I just noticed you mentioned the output shaft too..... are the bearings/u-joints on the drive shaft good? Or is there any damage to the shaft that would throw it off balance? A vibrating drive shaft could cause damage too.
Haha "A vibrating drive shaft could cause damage too." (insert immature joke here)
Starting a new post huh? I think those are the only 2. I had been told that in stock form the Mitsu was a better unit, and was used on more trucks pre 87 or so. The Mazda when sealed and maintained is supposed to be good too, they just have a history of burning up due to the leaks I mentioned in your other post.
Your question from your deleted post: Is there any other transmissions for your truck other than the Mitsu or Mazda, and is one better than the other.... Not that I know of.
I don't know if your question got carried over from the other post. I am not too sure what Ken did with it???
