Warning : This is NO JOKE............

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Apr-02 AT 03:55 PM (EST)]I just received this via a Reputable source that this is becoming a new game involving North America's Youth.

Please take this Notice seriously and Be careful when you drive.

[b][font color=red]

Subject: Spunkball - Beware

Please read..... this is scary & Most Important to your safety....

Please keep all windows rolled up when stopped at traffic lights, as only cars with windows down are being targeted. Groups of teenagers have been caught,in alarming numbers, playing a new and dangerous game called Spunkball!

Spunkball consists of a group of teens in a Car pulling up to a
stoplight, and looking around for a car stopped near by with an open
window. When one is spotted, the teens shout, Spunkball", and
throw a gasoline soaked rag that has been wrapped in aluminum foil
through the open window. On the outside of the foil attached a small
firecracker, with the fuse lit. When the firecracker explodes,
it shreds the foil, and the rag is ignited, causing a large flame
that may catch the interior of the car on fire.
Spunkball playing has already claimed two lives, caused uncountable injuries due to burns, and caused thousands of dollars in damage to automobiles. The best defense, say authorities, is to keep all windows rolled up when stopped at traffic lights, as only cars with windows down are being targeted. If you are at a red light and hear a shout of "Spunkball", and notice something come flying in your window, the best thing to do is to have all passengers immediately exit the vehicle.
DO NOT try to retrieve the object, as it will ignite once the firecracker explodes.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU CARE ABOUT.

Warning : This is NO JOKE............

I was sent this email about 2 months ago. I don't doubt it has probably happened somewhere. The thing I hate is that by everyone passing the email around, not only does it inform people, it also gives a group of kids who think they are a 'gang', or just out to do damage and harm an idea on what to do...

Then it's hopefully "dead news" and I hope it stays that way.

In either case, the type of punks that would play at that would probably be driving a car that likely would only let them see the bottom of my doorframe anyway....

Urban legend, just like the one about gang members killing you for flashing your lights. This one has already been debunked on some of the urban legend sites.

It may be an "urban legend," but things like this do happen on occasion. Even though it may not be a fad, it's always a good idea to keep an eye out on what's going on around you, especially on the road. I don't think the activities of some punk kids would make me roll up my windows, but if I was to hear of this sort of thing I would be wary at stoplights.
I may be a little paranoid, but this area has a high incidence of drive-by attacks. A couple years ago some kids here driving around on the weekends shooting red paintballs at people to make them think they'd been shot. Just last month the pastor of a near-by United Methodist church (I especially remember this one because I too am United Methodist) was out riding his bike when some kids rode by and hit him with a baseball bat. He was in the hospital for a few days with all sorts of broken bones and lacerations.
Really, in this world, you can never be too careful.

Two years ago when I was stationed in Georgia, a small brush/forest fire was attributed to some teens experimenting with fire bombs that sound strangely similar to these spunk bombs...I say this only because firecrackers were also involved there. I think a previous post got it right...sometimes these urban legends start off as pure myth, but tend to give some folks "bright ideas" on how to spend their leisure time. Let's hope it just stays a myth.

About the scariest thing that we did at red lights when we were teenagers was get out of the car, run all the way around it, and then get back in before the light turned green. Man we were crazy back then!!:P
