Hi all, my 400 runs very rough when it's cooled off--say, overnight, or when I get off work (car sits all day). 5 minutes after I start it and it's warmed up, it runs fine. No vacuum leaks.
I've found that the choke is opening too quickly. I'll start it in the morning and low and behold its running rough and the RPM's drop, and within a minute the choke is trying to open. I'll push it closed more and the RPM's go back up and it smooths itself out.
Here's the kicker. Here's how I have set the choke...With the motor cold, I turned it all the way in the rich direction so that the plate closed, then lean again so that it barely opened, then rich again so that it just closed. And, this method made the choke housing mark land on 3 rich, just like the engine decal says. Choke pull down is about 1/8 inch.
Why is it opening prematurely when all the settings seem to be fine?
The problem has definitely been there a while, but it's more of a summer problem. It has my attention now though because I recently rebuilt the carburetor, and this is the only thing keeping it from being perfect.
Been through two choke caps now. Getting the same results. Do I need to go about setting it differently, maybe turning it way past 3 rich? Or perhaps the pull-down clearence isn't right?
