I OWN A 97 F-350 AUTOMATIC PSD 4X4 LWB. AT 38K my transmission Light indicator started to flash and the transmission kicked into safety mode. I took it to an authorized ford dealer for repair. They informed me that they were going to have to replace the Torque Converter based off the EEC code. The day they said it was ready, I drove it off the lot only to have the same indicator light come one again. So again, I am back at the shop only this time they tell me the same code is being sent from the EEC unit but is being caused by a brake light switch. I asked the Shop foreman how they were able to accurately diagnose the first code and identify that the Torque Converter was a problem (this item cost me $800 to replace). He informed me of a machine in the shop that could isolate the Torque Converter from all other electronic components. I spoke with several transmission shops and they informed me of two ways to accurately test Torque converters 1) to pressure test it or 2) tear it down and examine the inside of the converter. Does anyone know of the type of machine the Shop foreman is talking about for the Ford Dealer? I am feeling like a miss diagnosis cost me $800.
So how far away from the dealership did you get before the light came back on? Did you take it immeadiatly back to the dealership at that point? What is the code the EEC is putting out (what is the number)? I'd say the dealership screwed up and to keep from eating an $800 repair they fed you a line of crap. If you knew how much those tech guys earn you'd be surprised they do as well as they do. They always keep a half dozen people around a dealership that are really good at what they do then they hire a bunch of kids out of technical school for $11 per hour to get their experience at YOUR expense. Don't you find it peculiar that the light came on with the exact same code causing it? Come on tech guys -- let's here from you!
