Injector swap

I am about to swap out the injectors on my 86 6.9
it has 126k on the original Set.
Got a good deal on 8 Lucas injectors.
I have a shop manual and am seeking any experienced advise before taking on this task.

Thanks......AlanT

Injector swap

It is a piece of cake. Just loosen the line to the injector 5/8 wrench and unscrew the injector (one inch wrench) and put in the new ones. There is a copper washer on the lower end that seals the injector to the cylinder head that should be replaced.

After installing the new injectors you will need to get a return kit that includes the new o-rings, injector cups, and fuel lines/clamps. Two things to remember when changing injectors: 1.) Make sure to use new copper washers. 2.) MAKE SURE TO TORQUE THEM TO 35 FT. LBS. You must torque them all to 35 so they will seat, and so they do not develop a leak sometime in the future.

I learned the hard way, I did not torque the injectors and they started smoking exhaust. I could hear squeaking inside the cab, when I opened the hood, two of the injectors were leaking exhaust.

The new injectors came with copper washers and two orings each.
not sure what the injector cups are? I've been thinking about getting a new torgue wrench so I guess this is as good a time s ever.

I think he is talking about (injector cups) the plastic black return caps that fit down over the O-rings on the tops of the injectors. If you don't break the old ones or if they haven't become brittle you can use the old ones again. Take them all off as an assembly and replace the return hoses while you've got them off. If they do need replaced, they shouldn't be all that expensive.

Suggest that you replace the return line caps. they are grey normally not black. They do come off very easy and can be reused, but are a problem with air leaks. For what they cost you should replace them.

I do however suggest that you do not remove the timing gear while changing the injector pump. You can remove the two bolts on the front and access the 3 bolts that hold the pump to the timing gear. You may need to modify a 9/16 wrench to access the lower bolts. I took a long wrench and made it thinner and ground the outer areas to allow it to fit.
