E4OD tranny leak

Twice in the last 6 months, my 1993 F150 with an E4OD transmission has spewed out transmission fluid after making a fairly long trip. (>150mi) The fluid looks to be running out of the access cover for the torque converter. After it cools down overnight, it is fine. After the first episode, I just thought that it was overfilled. I changed the fluid and filter, and all was fine until last week.
Any ideas ?

My dad's work truck did that the other day too. It is a 1991 F-350 with a 351 and an E4OD tranny. We had gotten stuck so I was trying to get it out. I think the tranny got a little hot so the main seal started to leak. The seal is at the front of the transmission. Hope to hear more from others on this "problem".

Exclamation 1995 F250 460CID E40D Tranny Leak

Your symptoms sound exactly like mine, except I went only 45 miles with the last eight up a winding mountain road. The speed varies from 1-20mph. Just as I parked my 19 foot 5th wheel there was a lot of smoke. It was coming from the inspection rubber on the bottom of the bellhousing. The tranny fluid boiled out, it didn't smell burnt but it was not pink (or even faintly reddish) either. Like yours it did not leak after cooling. I had mine towed home ... $200. In seraching this site I saw many others with this problem. The common thread seemed to be tranny was worked hard and with little air movement thru the radiator and the tranny fluid boiled over. I have a cooler in front of my radiator. The truck did not appear to be excessively hot after pulling the hills. This was on Mem'l Day weekend with ambient temps at apx 65-80 degrees. I have pulled the same place when it was 100 degrees ambient. Tranny shop says to fill tranny and bring it in for COMPLETE flush including filter replacement for $180, otherwise the burnt fluid may cause a destruction of tranny parts (a costly repair or rebuild). I see that you did that too. It makes me wonder if I should be looking into the tranny cooler for problems. Or maybe I need a fan to blow over it at extremely low speeds while pulling. I will have mine flushed next week. I'm not sure if this helps in anyway, but it's information. I also would like any suggestions to the nature of this problem.

EDIT
I just found these 2 items on this site :
1. no thermostat will cause the engine to over heat after long use.
The thermostat controls the flow of coolant, so if it flows to fast, then it
will not cool properly.

2. Running without a thermostat will increase the wear rates in your engine
dramatically. The wear rates double for every 10F under 180. The straight
six will show higher cylinder bore wear anyway in the #1 cylinder due to
coolant circulation patterns. Plus, as has been mentioned before, it will
mess with the computer controls and your fuel consumption will increase.
Engine efficiency also goes down so your fuel consumption goes up even
without the computer messing with it. It takes more throttle to move the
truck.
================================================== ========
I remember this past winter that the truck took tremendously long time to warm heater up and temp gauge was always really low. I remember now that I bought (but never installed) a thermostat. I know my truck used to run a lot warmer and they gauge showed it.
Perhaps this IS MY PROBLEM ... that may be the difference cause I've drug my 5th wheel up the mountain when the ambient temp was 100 degrees with no problem.
I also thought my truck for sometime didn't pull as easy as it used to. Not as much poop to it. Set the cruise control and away I go, now it seems to work harder keeping speed up.
