I have a 2001 PSD 7.3L 2wd, I was wondering how hard it is to convert a rear end that is not limited slip to one that is?, Can I just get one from a wreaker and put it in. Or is there just a kit of some sort?.
I find the traction is terrible in this thing, I dont know if it is because of all the wieght in the front of what. Even in the rain the tires spin freely.
Its almost that simple. If you do this you will have to check the patern on the ring gear again to make sure it is good. I have done this an there is about a 50 50 shot as to it matching up. If it is off it will only take some minor adjustments. But that also is where the skill comes in. It takes some practice to set up ring gears.
We got a 350 DRW here at the shop that will only do a Peg leg burn out.....we scored a LS off eBay for about $150 for a Dually D-80. Now we just have to set it up....and smoke all 4 of them! haha....as soon as we figure out this mysterious hole in the piston....
thanks I will have to look into it I guess, why dont they put limited slip in all trucks?
good question- it is up to the dealer to order what he will think he will sell, for instance here in colorado, you pretty much cant find one on the lot without an LS rearend.i would sugest that if you are going to go to the trouble of taking your old one out and put another one in, you might look into an aftermarket locker, the factory LS is not a very good unit, you could spend a couple hundred more and get something that really works

Next time you change your rear end lube, don't add any friction modifier. My factory L/S is so tight it chatters going around corners like a locker......gives similar traction too.

What is this friction modifier your talking about??, I have only had 79 fords before so this is all new to me.
Just asked this question of my trusted mechanic (who also runs a 7.3 PS tow truck). He told me that it was better to live with it as the only way he would suggest doing it would be to remove and replace the axle. He then smiled and rubbed his fingers together . . . I got the point. However, if there are other suggestions, I too would certainly like to hear them.
Yeah...should be a simple R&R. Just have to check the preload and maybe do some shimming...but that is it.....should bolt up if its a FOMOCO unit....out of another axle......At least for the D-80...which i got a unit that might be up for sale....haha...i think we got a dead hole in the PSD......going to sit for a while!
I found out it's simple to replace the stock diff with a LSD. If you are careful the process is easy. By using the same ring gear and keeping the side shims on the same side. Mine dropped in no sweat. Good Luck , Mike
