I use regualr assemble lube in a big tube. It is black. I don't think the brand matters near as much as actually using it properly. If it moves I lube it.
Ok here's the next question! Will most assembly lubes last a while? The reason i ask is cause i'm getting ready to put a 302 together but it won't be going in right away.
I can't see the melling red fluid lasting too long. It is about as thick as 90W gear lube. The grease should last for a very long time unless the engine is setting in a 120 degree garage for a long time.
I don't understand the wide variety of thickness in the lubes.
I use Tetrimoly grease on everything except the rings. The stuff is cheap, and the moly is the main ingredient in the black, expensive, assembly lubes. I use delo 15-40 on the rings. I also "pack" the oil pump with tetrimoly grease. It causes it to almost instantly build pressure in the engine.
Sean,
Are you talking about the RedLine assembly lube being like 90 weight? Not what I've used. It's tenacious as heck, and gets all over everything and stays until vigorous wiping to clean it off. I've never let it sit for any extended period in a hibernating engine however.
Guess I don't understand about the concern for longevity, as any new build needs to have its oiling system primed before startup, and I wouldn't crank on a hibernating engine without priming first either? JMHO.
Steve
I have never used red-line. Melling makes some lube that looks like tranny fluid but is thicker. I have used it on an engine that was built in one day and broke in the next. You are tight about priming. That is always a must in my book!
Cam/valve train assembly grease, ARP Assembly lube, White Lithium Grease, Crane Cams break in lube additive for the first 100 miles, Valvoline 10-40, and last but not least, Vasaline for the rubber seals/o-rings that contact the moving parts. Pack the oil pump and grease metal that contacts metal. I also pour a little oil on the valve train before installing the manifold then valve covers.
I intend to prime the engine after i put it together, However it will be sitting for a little bit till i have the time to put it in hopefully not more than a month or so.
