88 F150 - 4x2 w/ manual trans and 4.9. Anyway, the brake pedal nearly bottoms and grabs the rear brakes ( which are significantly in need of shoes),
Bottom line, I think that the Master Cylinder w/ internal proportioning valve is the culprit. Ford's shop manual seems to suggest power bleeding the MC after replacement. The only other MC I did was a bench bleed followed by a regular bleed. Will this work? Truck is not worth much, but I will do a reasonable repair to keep it rolling.
If your rear shoes are done or out of adjustment you can get very low pedal travel and the rear can be grabby in those situations too. I'd replace the shoes and see if it needs more if it were mine.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. The brakes were fine, and then they suddenly dropped to about a half inch from the floor. I think that only the rear ones are coming on -- and yes they are low. However, I think that the master cylinder,
(which supposedly has a proportioning valve in it) is probably bad. I have brake system fail lights now as well. I just wanted to know about how to bleed it.
