Question Big Block Swap

I have a 1983 full size Bronco with a straight 6 and I want to go to a 460 BB...What all with that require? I know I need a BB transmission But will that bolt up to the stock Transfer? If not will I need a new transfer as well or can I just go with a different coupler?

Arrow How rude, nobody has replied yet....!

Sorry dude, nobody has replied to your thread. I am also considering an engine swap from an I-6. It is my understanding, as you point out that for a 460 (Big Block) you would need the equivalent tranny (i.e. C-6, C-4, etc...) with the Big Block Pattern & Bell Housing to be able to bolt it into the new engine. I would advise you to get the tranny from a 4x4 donor truck so that it fits nicely. However, I'm telling you, a big drop in MPGs will result from that swap, not that I wouldn't be keen into doing it myself (if I had better income, that is...). good luck!

first my same ol'gripe the phrase "big block" denotes a chebbie engine ford never used those terms you are most likely thinking of a 385 series/family commonly(recently) the 429/460 for the love of god do not call a 460 a chebbie

but back to the point the 300 (240/300's common name is the Big six) is the second best truck motor deffantely keep and spend the money to improve it ya know intake/exaust/carb(?)/cam to inprove the giddie-up effect lol

or you could move up to a 351, stroke it to a 393. you will be able to keep the same tranny all you would need is the correct motor mounts and of course motor stuff an your set. mpg would be better then a 460 and probably about the same or a little less then the 300-6.

you could scrounge a 400 fmx "budget" bore and stroke it to 427 no specilty rods/crank a few thou under decked but not advisiable

now big six is a v~nice truck motor
but to go to a 460 .ya need(as far as i know mounts complete motor with all accesories computer header exaust tranny transfer case yoke to convert the different driveline size maybe
scrounge some of the proformance "big six" forums to see what can be done with them there are even super charger set-ups as i recall

give the 6 a chance

ps oh ya you prob need a drive shaft and the axle yoke not the transfer case yoke
