I tried to look back at others posts for any related topics. site needs a search option. been doing some research on the net for vegetable oil conversions. every site I have seen has raved over it. free fuel and better mileage. just wondering if anyone in this community has tried it on a powerstroke.
If you haven't heard of it, I would only expect you to scoff, but the inventor of the diesel engine actually meant for it to be ran on vegetable oil. at the time it was converted to diesel fuel, diesel was cheaper than vegetable oil. good ol' days.
scottie, there is a search function. Up at the top where it welcomes you, look at the bottom left corner in the blue bar. There was some posts on this a few days ago you should be able to find them.
We actually discussed this a while back and the conclusion was that the diesel engine was not designed specifically to be run on vegetable oil. This myth got started because shortly after the diesel engine was designed there was an exposition at the worlds fair (in Paris I believe) where a diesel engine was demonstrated being run on peanut oil.
Personally I find nothing wrong with the idea of biodiesel, but I won't put vegetable oil in my truck. There are too many things that can go wrong with a modern diesel without removing the harmful characteristics of vegetable oil. The older IDI engines are a much better candidate IMO for veggie oil.
When I find the time I plan on experimenting with making my own biodiesel. When I do I'll post my information.
My brother told me the other day that he had seen a "conversion kit" for sale somewhere (around $800) that would allow the use of cooking oil. He has a GMC so I told him to try it. No great loss if ruined his engine...lol
thanks for the help locating the search button, now that I have become familiar with the site, very impressive. I especially like the email option on a response notification. my compliments.....still doing research on the conversion.
On the search function, look for threads about biodiesel. We discussed it a couple weeks ago and there are some good links on it, both for vegie oil burners and against. I'm not opposed to alternative fuels that are cheaper and burn cleaner and better, but there are some things to take into consideration first. www.energy.cas.psu.edu/soydiesel.html
I've done tests on soy biodiesel and it has shown equal performance characteristics as #2 diesel, with a number of added benefits. I run a 2% blend in my truck now.
