I've never worked on an AC before and want to replace the compressor. Do I need to do anything to depressurize the system (isn't the refrigerant pressurized?)? Do I need any special equipment for this replacement? I have been having trouble searching the forum for answers to a question, so I wonder if anyone knows of any threads about this on here if they could link it. Thanks.
Teh term pressurized is misleading. The system has refrigerant in it that will be at a given pressure at a given temperature. To PROPERLY replace, you need to recover the refrigerant, replace compressor, then evacualte the system. In other words, it is NOT a do-it-yourself job!!
Why do you need to replace compressor? Not working? YOu need to check the charge of refrigerant and any electrical issues before condeming the compressor.
Take it to a local shop and have them do it. Besides doing it illegally by doing it yourself, they can give you a warranty and have all the tools ($1000's worth)
