'75 f100, c6,4x4. ok guys, need a little help here. i replaced the neutral safety switch but i am missing the actuator on the steering column. does anybody know exactly what it is called or what it looks like. from what i have been able to dig up it might just be some kind of a clip that snaps on, but i am not sure.
As far as I know, it is just a piece that stuck up out of column that was molded into the shifter sleeve that moved the switch. My 77 F100 is broken off too, so I just bypassed the switch. It will start in any gear, so you have to be careful. Also the back-up lights will not work either.
tks for the reply, but i have had it bypassed. i am just trying to get the old girl fixed up. hence new switch. if i knew what it looked like i might be able to fab something. this must be a common problem. any help will be appreciated.
it is not a straight up and down kind of connection. i thought i could put a bolt or screw in there, but it would not reach the switch. whatever is supposed to be there must come up and then go foword to reach the nss. i have all ready spent the $50 on the nss and i did not think it would be a big deal to hook it up. that is what i get for thinking. any more ideas?
yes dennis, that would be the back side of the switch. i do not want to make a big deal out of this, but i want to get her sold. so, i would like to be able to at least say all the lights work the way they are supposed too. more importantly, it has just bugged me since the day i got her. i can feel a hole in the top of the steering column, but i do not know what goes there.
I could probably take a picture of what I have for you tomorrow. My column is currently disassembled. Mind you, my NSS is disconnected so I'm not sure if the metal thing on the shift tube is complete.
i looked at a truck today that had all the parts. actually, i just felt her up. the part i am looking for seems to be a clamp. but i do not know if it is like a hose clamp that goes all the around or just a tight fitting clamp that snaps on. if anyone has fixed this problem, please enlighten me.
I've actually had mine break off too (76 F250). It was a piece that is molded, welded or otherwise directly attached to the steering column. Since I couldn't replace it, I took the switch plate off the steering column and moved it to where I could reach it for starts. Only problem... I have to do the same for backup lights... and it's not easy to see behind you when you're reaching under the dash! So, I figured I'd rewire it to be a couple of switches (one for NSS and one for backup lights). I didn't want to bypass the NSS all together, cause I kinda think it's good to give some wanna-be thief a puzzle to solve when trying to start it... and it's good for safety too!
If you don't want to spend too much time on it, maybe just rewiring to "on and off" switches will work for your need of selling it in working order.
By the way, if anybody has a great way to do this, please let me know. I'm able to figure it out, but if somebody's already done something like this, sure would make it quicker.
thanks for the reply. actually, i was thinking the same thing about the switches. i am not too concerned about the theft part of it, as anyone who took the ole girl would probably bring it back the next day or it would be out of gas down the road aways. no, she isn't that bad and she paid for herself the first winter we had her hauling firewood. i most likely will not sell her but we are buying a house and need a little extra cash. i really should not worry about it, but i spent a lot of time getting everything else working (except the manual steering). i think toggle switches are probably the easiest choice, chrome ones that will match my guages, just not too many. do not want her too look like a cockpit. oh well, chalks out-flaps up. thanks again.
All,
It sounds to me like no one knows what they are talking about.
Let me help, maybe?
The neutral safety switch is actuated by a small finger that sticks out of the column @ the NSS. This finger is actually a clip that snaps onto the shifter tube inside the column. It is still available, to my knowledge, and can't be worth much. Why don't you get a clip and install it and be done with the drama.
Good luck,
KingFisher
you are correct, i do not know what i am talking about. that is why i posted here. if it is just a clip, i am sure i could pull one off a junker or if i knew exactly what it was called i could buy or order one. that would make me a happy camper and end this drama before it turns into a saga. if you know the correct name of the part please assist. i am going to give a junkyard a try this weekend if possible. parts stores i have checked are as clueless as i am.
Hey kc73, I know what your talking about Its a index arm that clamps to the shift tube that runs inside your steering colum.
It is made of spring steel and the piointer exits the outer shell of the colum through a window that is cut into it. Its located under the dash about half way dowh the top of the steering colum. The pointer is indexed with the gear shifter through the shift tube and it contacts a piece that comes out of the neutral safty switch that slides back and forth with the shifter location.
