Yes, but the 82 will probally be a 8.8 and the 77 will be the 9 inch. Why? if you have a problem, rebuild the old one, its much more durable than the 8.8. the way to tell, does it have a removable cover on the back? if so its 8.8

neither rear ends (77 or 82) have removable covers on the back of 'em. I had a dana rear end on it when i bought it but the pinion (sp) busted on me so i went to a junk yard and took a rear end off a 77 f100 6 cylinder. Yeterday I drove my truck (with newly rebuilt 351M engine) from lawton Ok to Stillwater Ok about 200miles and now I have this weird noise coming from my rearend, sounds like Im dragging something! When I put it in drive it bangs into gear and when I put it in park it rolls back almost 2 feet before it catches! I was looking at my driveshaft and where it goes into my transmission it looks like its to short so it might also be my bearings in my transmission right there by the seal? But I also need a new rearend because of how loose the driveshaft due to the rearend. Anyways, i was wanting to take this rearend off the 82 f100 i have and but it on but it looks like the one I have now, no cover in the back , its just one piece.

The 82 would have a 9" too...the 8.8 wasn't used until 87 when they started using the ABS sensor.

Changing the rear end will not solve your problem if there is nothing wrong with it.

It sounds like trans trouble if it's rolling back 2 feet in park like the parking gear has only one notch left to it.

Apply the foot emergency/parking brake, put the auto trans in neutral, turn off the engine, and turn the drive shaft back and forth with your hand, watch the rear end, and see how much play there is.

Then again, have someone watch the drive shaft when you park, and see if it's turning while the truck is rolling back.
If it does, it's in the trans.

i put the truck in neutral and turned the driveshaft with my hand and its got alot of play in it. I think alot of the problem is that my driveshaft right now is to short, looking at it u can see where it should be at when it goes into the transmission, looks like about 2inches short. So that would lead to my bushings and seal going out in my transmission houseing, but i dont know what would be making my rearend go out. The only thing I can think of is that maybe since I have alot more torque and more power in this engine that maybe the rearend cant handle it? Plus it was from the junk yard! I have a 351M and rebuilt it with a high torque high performance cam shaft and engine kit. I had the piston cylinders bored out 60 and its got a rebuilt c6 trans.
