I don't think those switches are adjustable. I'd check the grommets that attach the gearshift rod to the rod that goes to the trans which is under the hood on the firewall. They could be sloppy. Also considering the age of the vehicle I'm sure there's wear in the gearshift collar mechanism. I had to replace 2 of those that actually cracked on an older Ford van I had. I went to the junkyard for a used collar, and had a tough time finding a good one; most of them were cracked.
The switch is on the transmission and the cracks I was referring to are at the gear shift collar. Upon furthur research I discovered that there is a linkage adjustment located around the bellhousing. The procedure for adjusting isn't that difficult, but it varies, a C5 or C6 is adjusted one way, and a AOD and E40D are adjusted another way. If you pick up a good truck repair manuel it will explain it. If you want let me know what trans you have, and I will be more than happy to send you the specific procedure for your trans.
A C5 or C6 adjust the same why so here is the procedure. I personally have never done this, but this info comes from my Chilton's Truck and Van Manuel.
Place the selector lever in Drive position. Hold it against the stop by applying an 8 pound weight to the selector lever ****. Loosen the shift rod adjusting nut. Shift the manuel lever at the transmission into the Drive position, by moving the lever all the way rearward, then forward 2 detents. With the selector lever and the manuel lever in position, tighten the nut at the bell housing. Remove the 8 pound weight from the steering column selector lever ****. Check the selector lever in all detent positions with engine running to ensure proper adjustment.
Hope this helps.
