I have only owned power steering vehicles and now I have a beater that is not, I was told today that there is a reservoir that you are suppose to put steering fluid in!! Am I being taken for a sucker or is there one, I looked under the hood (non mechanic) and could not see a reservoir attached to the steering column to be filled. By the way it is a 1982 F-150 4x2. Any help would be appriated thanks.
I thought all 1980s F-series came standard with power steering?
At any rate, on manual boxes (going by the 60/70s series) there are two pipe plugs on top of your box. One is for adjusting the worm gear, the other is for filling with grease or gear oil. If you have one plug that is depressed it is probably the adjustment and the raised one is the fill plug.
If my truck has power steering, there is some seriously wrong with it because it is burtal to turn at slow speeds and have to make wide turns at normal speeds. Stupid question but, the truck was mickey-moused under the hood by the last owner, and I have already had to fix the thing i know about (work in progress). How would I be able to tell if it did indeed have power steering or manual steering. On another note if indeed it is one of the two where is this box located??
