Excess transfer case fluid

This morning I went to the bank, while using the ATM, I left my truck running.
I came out to find a puddle of transmission fluid on the ground. Hoping that it was not mine, I looked under the truck, and found that both the front and rear drive shaft seals were leaking. Stopped at my local parts store and picked up both seals, came home, and installed them. When I took the front shaft out of the transfer case, a good 2.5 quarts of fluid came out! In looking in the book the book says 2.5 PINTS! Does anyone know where the extra fluid came from?

I have not added any fluid since the last change about 30K miles ago.

I should tell you that I have a 96 XLT extended cab, 4X4, auto, with a 3.0 Ranger, with 197K miles.

Your ideas are appreciated!!

About the only place the fluid can come from is the transmission. Did you check the xmsn level to see if it was low?

It was down about a pint. (Bottom of cross hatching on stick.) Have put in about a quart the past 6 months.

Went out this morning to take my wife to work. Backed my Ranger out of the driveway, it seamed sluggish, put it into drive, it would not move, the O/D light started flashing.

Checked the transmission fluid, it was not showing on the stick, added a quart, still not showing, added a 2nd quart, just touching the bottom of the stick.

No puddles at all on the ground. Without checking the transfer case, I am betting it all went there.

Other than Input and Output seals any other ideas?

Sounds like a seal. The transfer case isn't too difficult to remove. That's probably where the seal is bad.
