Question Fueling Problem

I am having a problem filling the gas tank on my 78 F150. This is my second truck that is difficault to fill, and I am not talking about the $ of gas, I have to fill it very slowly or the gas backs up the filler neck and shuts off the pump or worst yet spills out. I have not taken the tank off. A visual inspection of it and everything looks OK. Any ideas?

Look under the truck where the filler tube goes to the tank. The smaller hose is the vent. Make sure it is not kinked. The larger, filler hose, where it goes between the frame and bed, could be colapsed from age too. This would cause the fuel to back up in the filler becouse it can't drain into the tank as fast as the pump is pumping it.

Both hoses have to be open and clear.

I have a '76 F250 with the same problem. I just inspected my filler and vent hoses. The vent hoses appear ok, but the filler hoses are colapased. It appears to me as a bad engineering design as there is very little room between the bottom of the bed and the top of the frame for the rubber filler hose to keep a non restricted flow of gas to the tank. I can't fill the tanks to full or when it gets hot out comes the gas.

All,
There are no engineering short comings on these trucks!
These are the greatest engineering achievments since the pyramids.
The hoses are nearly thirty years old by now and they sag.
Replace them and all will be well in the world.
I would rotate the hose 90 degrees. I'll bet that would help.
Good Luck,
KingFisher

Check bed

This happened to me when I first got my truck. Turned out that the bed was sagging in the back due to rusty supports and making the filler hose kink up... just an idea

My '74 and '75 are hard to fill. I have to pump both of them slowly or half of the gas ends up on the ground. I found out holding the gas nozzle sideways towards the rear helps out a bunch. Why I don't know. I'll have to give the fill pipe/hose another look. But it was fine when I put a new tank on last year. And not to mention you have to stand there and hold the thing or it falls out the filler hole while you are waiting for the gas pump to run out of digits.
