AODE/7w question(s)

I have pulled a 302 w/tranny from a '97 Explorer, it is to be put in a '96 Ranger. Right now I have the whole shibang laying in my shop floor. My questions are is the transmission an AODE or a 40R7W? What's the difference? What are some things that I would be stupid not to check and what are some DIY upgrades that I should do while I have it where it's easy to work on?
Any tips on working on the trans is welcome as I have never worked on one other than pressure washing to get the junkyard crud off of them.

Ok, I've looked through the Tech Article about identifying tranny's and I doesn't answer any of my questions. Surely there is someone here that could shed a little light on this.

It's a 4R70W. The last AODE was made in 1995.

The main difference is the gear ratios are different. The 4R70W has a wider ratio span, hence the "W" on the end.
