Well this is my first post here and I want to thank you all for any input !
Well I am getting a 96 Ford Ranger in a few weeks it has a 4 cylinder engine (I assume its a 2.3L). I was wondering how many horsepower this little engine has ? and how I can modify it for more power?
Not many mods you can do for the little 4 bangers. Intake, chip, exhaust and maybe an electric fan are about all you can do for the little 2.3 liter's of fury unless you want to spend some major money.
You are lucky. They make a chip for yours. After the intake mod and the exhaust, that was all I had left. It was enough to get me an estimated 140HP out of my 2.5L four popper. I finally quit though since they don't make a chip for me. Welcome to FTE!
I'd recomend the electric fan, i installed one on my 94 4.0l and could tell a difference, so i'd imagine it'd help you out some. that fan has to create some drag on the 4 banger. or you could spend mony on other mods, and wait until the stock fan is all cracked up and the fan clutch goes out, like i did.
How will these modifications affect reliability ? Also with the Modifications you guys have listed how many horsepower could I possibly gain ? My friend has a Dodge Dakota 4 Banger and we are going to have a drag.. I think the Dakota has a bit more power than the Ranger but I want to take him...
Thanks again for the advice !
Your truck should romp on a Dakota 4 banger. He's quite a bit heavier than you are. Some people question how a K&N will affect reliability, but it basically comes down to a matter of opinion. If it gives you any horsepower increase, it won't be anything more than 3HP. An exhaust might actually help out your reliability and should bring you about 5% more HP. A performance chip will have you running premium fuel...that is about the only draw back. It will give you roughly 10% more HP. As far as the electric fan, the only way it would decrease reliability is if you get a cheap fan that craps out on you and lets your engine overheat. So in other words...you might be pushing 130HP when you are done.
