engine swap

I would like to swap a 1990 351 into a 1992 which currently has a 302, both are automatics
and both are F-150's. What problems or traps can I expect ?

Thanks Sturgis

Man you wouldn't believe the trouble ... you better just let me haul that 351 away for you this summer to save yourself the headache. Is it anywhere near Dallas?

Seriously, just pulling and dropping these "new" engines is a pain with all the lines and connectors to mark/disconnect/reconnect correctly. I spent more time on that on my 90 rebuild than I did on the older stuff I'm more used to. Guess I'm showing my age when I call a 90 model new... Anyhow, whatever you do, it will go easier if you take one of those handy little digital cameras and make pictures from every angle as you go.

My manual shows that the wiring bundle changed from 91/92. So you'll have that to deal with. Also, the firing order is different between 302/351 so the computer is probably different. The more I think about this the more reasonable it sounds for you to just let me take that problem off your shoulders. {|-)

Good luck

You'll mahe better headway if you have the whole truck as a donor. Automatics, are both the same? AOD and E4OD are both available and both use totally different set-up.

Other than wiring and computers, should be easy swap.

I have both complete trucks 302 is in front of an AOD, 351 is in front of E4OD
302 needs rebuild and E4OD needs rebuild . 351 and AOD are in great shape.

Have both complete trucks so computers not a prob wiring bundle could be, do you think I could swap wiring harness also.

Sturgis,
I'm just going by the so-so schematics in the back of my Haynes. The 90/91 is page 12-43 and the 92 and newer is on page 12-54. They look pretty similar for what it is worth. Pin 3 on the powertrain control module has a different label and apparent different purpose. On the 90 it ties to the speed sensor and cruise control, on the 92 it goes to a PSOM (whatever that is???) Everything else looks the same from what I can see. I'd think the best thing would be to try to get the AOD/351 to work with your 90 harness. I'm not sure if the computer is different or the wiring is different or if it doesn't matter to address the firing order delta. Good luck with it.

PSOM is Programable Speedometer Odometer Module...its the speedo head in the dash. In 92 they switched to using a speed sensor on the rear axle instead of the cable/gear setup in the transmission like on the 90.
