Question Help: Does a tire change make a real difference?

Hi guys, I have a 1992 Bronco (A/T, 2WD I-6 300cid) with the stock 235X75R15 Firestone tires. They work OK. What differences/improvements should I expect from installing bigger-than-stock tires, i.e. 31X10.5R15, etc I already tried smaller & wider tires and it only got worse (fuel economy, etc) thanks...! Why do people who own Broncos get always bigger than stock tires?

Calazo,

Well on a half ton truck/bronco stock tires look more like donuts for a trailer. People put on bigger tires because it makes the truck look more stout, provides better ride and handling and fills out the wheel well better. If you put on a set of 31's you should expect to see alittle worse fuel economy but not much. I'd say if you can afford a set do it up. Check out galleries to find other bronco's with 31's.

Because they take it off road or because they think it looks cool. Myself, if I had your truck and I was not going off road with it, I would just buy the best wet (or snow if you get it) traction tire I could get in a P235 size. If I was going to spend my money on improving the ride, I would replace all the rubber bushings with poly and replace the shocks with adjustables.

You have a baseline (should read 4.9 vs. 300?) , respectable, nice ride that should last 100s of thousands of miles with a min. of money spent. I would not waste my money turning it into a 4x4 wanna-a-be with big tires. I would work at keeping it nice. A nice alarm would not hurt or nice chrome tube bumpers if you wanted to dress it up. Performance wise, a limited slip for the rear end is always worth the money in a 2x4, imo.

A tire change will not make much of a difference in performance, size wise. If you went to a LT235 it might handle better and dip less in turns.

When ever you do a change like tires, or gears, keep in mind you could be chaning the shift points in an automatic trans, and your speedo won't read the same. However there are things you can buy (speedo gears, etc) to over come this.

also keep in mind, the more rubber touching the ground equals more friction, less fuel economy.
