2.5 litre engine roughness
i have a 2000 4x2 ford ranger xlt, with the 2.5 litre engine, 5 speed manual trans. 3.73 gear ratio. truck runs decent when accelerating through the gears, but when you reach cruising speed, with light throttle application, engine runs rough. vibrating the truck . things i've already checked: wheel balance, rim runout, driveshaft balance , motor mounts, trans mounts, installed new tires, changed rear universal joint, replaced spark plugs, pcv valve, air intake temperature sensor, tps sensor, checked egr operation per service manual procedures, changed fuel filter, checked engine vacuum ,- reads 19 and needle is steady, good return of vacuum reading after revving engine, changed air filter, checked for air leaks (false air) found nothing wrong. no trouble codes are present. could it be program of engine management system computer. i'm at my wits end with this thing. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (varmit) forgot to mention truck just has 21000 miles on it, and it has decent compression.

Plug wires. At night, start the truck, and open the hood. If you see a light show, you will want to replace the wires. My 2.3, same except for stroke as a 2.5, acted like I was jazzing the throttle, and was trailer hitching badly. I plugged the EGR vacuum line with a golf tee, and the problem went away.(before seeing the wire light show). A new EGR did nothing, and I was lucky that they took it back at the dealer... Finally 'saw the light' and viola, got new wires. Problem gone. Symptom most notable when you are at cruise as that is when the load is highest on the plugs.
