In the next 30 - 60 days, I'm gonna be selling my Jeep and looking for a decent work truck. Probably 1980 to 1991 x-cab F150. I've had several F150s in the past. All V8s. From 302 - 460. Love the power, but gas is really getting high.
So I'm interested in the 300ci I6. Hear great things about the torque. And if I go with the I6, I'll try to find a manual transmission. This truck will be used mainly for runs to the hardware store, and might occasionally pull a single car on trailer.
Will I get any better mileage with the I6? And will the I6 be strong enough for occasional towing?
I'd choose a 300 I6 over a 302 V8 anyday on a 86 or newer model, 80 to 85 I'd just pick the one in the best condition. 351W and 460 over the 300 I6 in any year. Gas mileage doesn't matter - none of them are going to do to well, some individual trucks just do better then others.
The I6 is better than the 302, in my opinion, for a work truck.
But if you are going to tow more than 4000lbs on the highway, I would go with a 351 or larger (or a diesel). The 300 will do it, don't get me wrong, but it will be somewaht slow.
I have the 300 in my bronco and in a 95 F-250 both with manual tranny's... I like the 300, and it does ok even in the F250 but the gas milliage isn't that great on the EFI engine. My carb 300 in the bronco does better on gas. I like the 351 windsor HO's that came out in the mid 80's F-series trucks. I had one in an 86 F150 and it was a heck of a rig... Like mavinwy said, the 300 will pull the larger loads... but don't get in any hurry.
I love the 300's though... I think it's one of the best and most reliable motors Ford ever made. It mostly depends on how the truck your looking at is geared... they came out with everything from 2.73 gears (like in my bronco) to 3.73's... rearend gearing and which trans you have makes more difference on how it perfoms in towing and mpg than the engine does really. If you can find one with a granny 4 speed and a moderate rearend gearing... maybe 3.55's it would be a great truck.
