71 429 any good?
the guy said it was out of a 71 torino. is this year motor a good one? what about the heads? would it be decent for my 85 f250 4x4?
Also remember that 1971 and earlier Fords (as well as other MFG.'s) rated their HP at the flywheel...your 429 being 360 HP, while the very next year the HP ratings were net...208 HP. Now they did drop the compression to 8.8 :1 but that no where near accounts for the differance of 152 HP. In other words do not take the claim of 400 HP to seriously unless they have actual dyno figures from that engine.
Just my 2 cents worth...

He's probably talking about rear wheel HP. I have a 68 429 in my truck, I like the engine but forget MPG. It makes pretty good HP. Pushes my 4000lb brick 8.40's in the 1/8. Bad thing is the heads, the flow numbers really stink. Mostly due to the big bump in the exhaust runner. The upgrade to aluminum CJ heads is WAY out of my budget.

Check out this site.

It lists head flow number for every engine you can imagine. Even ported the cast iron heads stink.
Sorry

I want to back up before I make enemies. All I'm saying is that by the time I pay for a professional port job on the iron heads I could buy aluminum ones that flow better and take 100 lbs off the front end.

I'm sure all the people running 500+ HP 385's with the D0VE heads will be glad to hear their heads stink. What are you going for - 800 HP? Once again, it's a question of application.
From the site: "Bigger is not always better (Highest flow numbers and/or largest port volume). -- Velocity is just as important.
# We want the best flow number's with the smallest volume and the highest velocity."
The numbers given for the D0VE-C heads compare very favorably with the one's listed for the Kaase heads. Kaase is pushing the envelope on 385 series performance.
