4x4 drivetrain question
I just bought a 76 3/4 ton chasis for my 77 body. It is full time 4x4, so my question is can I put big lockouts on it without to much trouble. It has divorced transfer case. I have been told that it might be a high boy because of the factory blocks under the rear leaf springs. Any truth to that? If not then what makes a highboy? I have also been told that the steering can be dangerous on this truck. It has two hoses that run down to what looks like a cylinder under the axle. True or False. Any info you can give is very Helpful. Wish me luck, because I ordered the conversion kit and the 5.9 cummins diesel. After I install this motor and a new set of gears, I hope it will be a runner. Thanks alot
The steering is not by any means dangerous but it can be high mantainance and a pain in the butt. It's a hydraulic assist, using the ram to apply pressure to make steering easier. Many people will convert to a regular power steering system. There are many threads regarding this which you can find using the search feature and I believe we have a well written tech article covering the steering conversion also.
Hope this answers a few of your questions. Welcome to FTE!!!
