Howdy;
I am a new Power Stroke owner (2001 7.3L, 6 spd manual F350) and have never owned or run a diesel before, I have several questions:
1. Where is the power band on this PS and at what RPM should I be shifting at?
2. Are there any particular 'diesel' service chores that I should be aware of?
3. Can anyone recommend a manual on this engine.
4. Any opinions on an exaust brake?
Thanks all for your help.

1-what ever rpm you get the turbo to spool up at
2-oil change 3000-5000 miles,fuel filter every 15000 miles, coolant additive every 15000 miles,coolant flush every 30000 miles, trans service at least every 30000(more often if you tow),front rear diffs every 100000 miles...did i miss any?
3-click on the red "PARTS SHOP" they sell repair manuals here
4-dont have any info or opinions on e-brakes
welcome the diesel world...WARNING:IF YOU START PUTTING HIGH PERFORMANCE MODIFACATIONS ON YOUR TRUCK, YOU WILL NEVER STOP
I think wlihntr meant that the power band for the PSD is whenever the turbo spools up, which I agree with. Once that turbo kicks in, you'll have all sorts of power to pull with.
Shifting depends on what you are doing, whether you are tooling around town or pulling a load. If you're just driving around, unloaded, you could probably shift around 2000rpm and be fine. If you're pulling a load probably a little higher, 2500rpm, even up to 3000rpm. On my truck the redline is about 3400rpm, I assume it's the same on yours. You could use that for starters, but vary it to what you like, and how you think it should be shifted. Everyone will shift at different rpms, depends on their driving habits. Do what feels comfortable to you.
Hope that helps a little bit. I'm sure someone with more experience driving a PSD with a stick will help out. I've been driving sticks most of my life, but have an auto in my PSD. Every truck is different and you just have to get to know the truck and how it runs.

Thanks much for the information. One more question, does the turbo spool up at a certain RPM? If so, is the RPM level preset or does it depend on the load of the pull? Appreciate the help! Thanks again...

First thing you should do is get some gauges!! Get the pyrometer, boost, get a third if you like. The tranny is not as important with the manual. Any way these little goodies will give you all the info on the turbo and how your truck is running. Hence the best answer as to when your turbo spools up!
I am pushing 2k RPM's when the turbo spools up. You will know when it does. You will hear a "whine" and you are in your peak torque range. I usually shift at about 1750 RPM's But when I am pulling I will run it up to 2500 before shifting. Enjoy your new truck!

Thanks much for the info. I pick up the '01 F350 4X4 PS on the 22nd of June and am looking forward to the drive home...
