I have a 93 XLT 5 speed with auto-locking hubs that will no longer go in to 4WD. My dash light goes on and off but no joy on the wheels locking up. Any help?
Question: Is it failing to lockup at the transfer case or at one/both hub/s? Do you have low range? The dash light going on and off is a good indication that the transfer case is shifting, but I'd verify that. If the transfer case is engaging, but the hubs aren't, the hubs are likely shot.
I've heard of someone who sells a rebuild kit for the auto hubs. Dealers sell auto hubs ($ for one auto hub=$ for 2 manual hubs approximately)
Best fix, though, is to replace the auto hubs with manual hubs.
Most likely it's the solinoid switch in the box attached to the axle. Try tapping it lightly and see if that will free it up. A lot of times it's just dirty and can be cleaned up.
There is a tech artical that goes through the process of disassembly and clean-up with pictures. Click on the above right hand corner for tech stuff.
With a little luck you might save your self some big bucks just with a good cleaning.
