My dash lights on 1998 Explorer Sport, 2 door. for 4 wheel high and low blink about 5 times, steady, then stop. Then repeat about one minute later. This continues while driving. It starts as soon as it's started. Turning the selector to 4 high on the dash does not engage the 4 wheel drive, nor do the lights indicating the 4 wheel drive is on. Any ideas? What sort of mechanism engages the 4 wheel drive. It is a motor? thanks
You prolly have a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the memory of your Explorers computer. Get it read. Autozone will do it for free. If its throwing a DTC it may not allow you to engage FWD, as a precaution. Your FWD is engaged by the transfer case, its a bunch of gears and electric motor, sort of. If no code; try removing the PCM's relay/fuse for 15 to let it reset. It might just go away

if it doesn't work you can use the search button at the top of the page. just enter transfer case motor and hit go. or search for cnthor, he's listed on the post.
my 97 had the same problem. the motor gets stuck in between the settings and then doesn't know where it is. i removed the motor and cleaned the armature with light sandpaper and solvent and fixed the problem.
