My tranny is leaking a bit(probably from the freeze plugs on the top cover). However, I checked the fluid level before going on a long trip and it was just barely below the fill hole.
Drove about 250miles to a lake, no issues. Truck sat for 2 days and on leaving the lake, I had problems shifting into 1 and 2 gears. Sometimes it would go if I pushed or pulled hard.
No facillites at the lake so I drove it 25 miles into the closest town. Because it was a holiday there were no shops open. I decided to check the tranny fluid level and when I pulled the plug nothing came out and this was probably not good cause the housing felt quite warm. I had no proper filling tools so I cut up a coke bottle in a way that I could get fluid into the fill hole. It only took 1/5th of a quart(200ML). As there was nothing for me to do about being 200+miles from home. I drove it and had no issues but I did not use 1st or 2nd. I get to the in-laws place and the truck sits for 2hours and on leaving, I have no problems shifting and everything feels about normal with perhaps a bit more grab between shifts.
Is this looking like a Tranny or Clutch issue or both???
I recently had the same problem with my 95 f150 4x4 with the m5od. I cant shift into 1st or 2nd. all other gears are fine. I pulled the top cover off of my tranny. ( I have a 3" body lift so i didnt have to drop tranny) And the 1st and 2nd shift fork is worn out completely. These trannys also leak on the top cover where there are 3 rubber plugs. My cover is at ford right now getting a new shift fork put on, $140 for fork (CAN $) and half hour for labour, because i gave them the cover and they didnt have to take my tranny down. Check my gallery, just got a digi cam and posted. It shows the rubber plugs off that leak so much, and the top cover with the 2 shift forks on it. You cant really tell how worn the fork is in the pic. Try draining your tranny and check for metal filings on your plug and what pours out. The tranny guy told me these are bad trannys for wearing down shift forks.
I drained the fluid last night at a Midas shop. 29$ was too good of a price when I remember the mess I made using a hand operated evacuator last time. The fluid was still in excelent shape. Nothing big came out but there were some fine metal filings on the drain plug. I am not sure what is normal. The shifting seemed to be a bit smoother but there is a bit of a grab between 1st and second. I am going to be pulling the top cover to deal with the plugs. How do you tell if the shift forks are worn?
