thermostat

hi all, i have a 88 f 150 thats getting a flatbed, whill removing the bed i cut the exaust off from about a half a foot behind the cab, to gain access to a bolt. before the removal there was always a slight backfire when you let of the throttle. know without the rear of the exaust there it's very evident. ive heard that without a thermostat that the engine doesnt heat up all the way and the comp sends more gas in to warm it up. Is this true? if so would putting a thermostat help this backfire? it hasnt had a thermo since i trade it for a cheby. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Whatever the cause of the backfire, you should be running a thermostat.
