I have a 84 F250 with a 460 motor that needs rebuilt. I talked to a guy that offered to rebuild a different motor, a 1975 460 that he calls police issue. He told me that it has the 4 barrel heads and manifold, where mine has 2 barrel heads and manifold, and is what he calls a Canadian 460. I have no idea what he is talking about, but he said rebuilding the 75 would give me a better motor. Of course he wants the old engine in return.
Am I getting ripped off? I really don't know Ford trucks that much.
I always think about "I know what my engine is or is not, no clue where his has been" I did my 86 460 last year for about $1000.00 parts and machine work, but included some goodies.
Be careful! I have a 460 out of a 76 mercury marquis it has a stock 4-barrel and duel exhaust and I highly doubt that police ever used that car lol. But I can be wrong I just went to find the original owners manual for the car but it vanished into thin air it had a section for the fluid levels for the police 460. This car was from the U.S.A. I think because the instrument cluster is in Mph. I live in Canada.
Just a question though. What is the casting # on the heads? If it is a "D0VE" That is probably why he wants to rebuild your motor.
I have no idea what the numbers are on the heads of my engine. I know very little about motors and that is why I am skeptical of this claim. I have not seen the motor he wants to sell me, but he did say it is a 'FE' motor, whatever that means. A friend of mine knows the original owner and said that the motor is a good runner, so I have decided to buy the engine and rebuild it myself. And then I'll rebuild the one I have and either sell it or keep it for a spare!
the FE blocks were primarily the 352, 360, 390, and i believe (don't quote me on this) the 428...you can find out more about the FE blocks in the FE Forum...i don't believe the 460 was one of these blocks, as they were not true big blocks if i remember correctly...just some info to think on...if i was you, i'd rebuild the motor yourself, tho...
