I guess this goes with my earlier post, (re: axle bearing/seals) but how would I know if the axle is bent - I don't really have any "New" vibrations/rattles, but it feels like the rear end may be grabbing - I kind of thought it might be warpped drums - but now I wonder... It comes and goes at "low" speeds...
with the leak from the axle seal your brake shoes are probably swollen up and grabbing, in my experience, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong axles only bend when the rear end of the car gets hit.
yep, thats why my axel wobbles, lol. i was doing a bit of drifting on a wet corner, well i ended up going parrallel with the curb doing 35 and the wheel hit right into the curb. bent the hell out of the rim, got a new rim thinking it would fix it, guess what...it didnt, lol. anyways, does it only do the vibrating under braking? you should check your shoe adjuster. the little thing that goes between the 2 at the bottom, its got a star looking thing in the middle of the shaft. if the drum is really hard, (i mean really hard) to take off, thats probably your problem, if its really simple, you might want to tighten them a bit and try the other side and repeat. you dont have to take anything apart, just turn the star, you can figure out what tightens or loosens the shoes. hope it helps. by the way, if it only does it under braking, its probably warped drums, you should get them done either way, helps stopping power.
The gear oil makes the brake pad swell up, rubbing against the drum. Not only that, at some point, when you step on the brake it locks the wheel up immediately. On my van, the "self-adjusting" parking brake handle "self-adjusted" too much and that caused overheating of the drum. That, in turn, burned out my seal and screwed up the whole back end. I almost lost the right wheel as a result. I ended up having to go to the junkyard to get a replacement axle for the right hand side. So, after you are done, check the parking brake to see if it's too tight. That might have been the cause.
