I hope to buy a remote starter/keyless entry (yes it already has keyless entry) this summer for my 99. Does anyone have a preference or brand they recommend? Also, what should I expect to pay? I know that I have to surrender a key (I have 3 spares) because of the theft system and that they will probably install an extra part for the key.

Stay with the Viper system. I was quoted about $375.00 for the antire alarm system with remote start. They are lifetime warenteed, and they stand by their claim, because I had to replace the brain, twice, and it cost me nothing. That was over a six year period. The reliability is good, but ultimatly, its the install that counts.
You just need two original keys for the vehicle to learn a third "key" from the alarm when it starts.
When you find an install shop, ask if they will make the wires look factory after it's installed and the relay mounted way up & out of the way along with the brain. If they don't, look elsewhere!
You will need a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) bypass module for any remote start system you pick. Some use its own "pellet", therefore not requiring a key, while others require a key (placed inside a box).
I choose an extended range FM/FM two-way remote starter with LCD disaplay. I can start my 'Gator from a hotel room where I can't even see my car. The LCD display shows when it is running and the remaining running time. I wired it so that the 2-stage unlock (driver then passenger) is retained.
I also added a temperature sensor so that I can see the interior temperature on the LCD keyfob. While I had the car apart, I also added switches to disable the air suspension and AWD from the driver's position. The AWD disable is done by a ground switched relay (with diode protection). I also added a switch to bypass the hood pin so that I can remote start with the hood open (and a third position to disable the starter).
The install took a lot of time, but I soldered each joint, then silicone tape, then electrical tape, then zip-tie.
JAMES.

Sorry to change the subject bro, but I have an 01 Expo which I just bought used and it already had some form of a remote start on it. It seems to have disabled the keyless entry system though because I can't get it to go into programming mode. I took it by Ford, and they couldn't either. They told me to bring it back on a work day and they would look at it, but I'm trying to figure it out. I unplugged the remote start because I really don't want it. Anyone know how to jump pins. The Ford mechanic told me that maybe if i jump the pins the computer will go into programming mode. I found the remote keyless module on the driver side firewall, but I don't know how to jump the pins. ANy suggestions?
Are you trying to program the buttons on the door? If so, all you need is two original keys that can start the car and the owner's manual. It will walk you through.
To remove the remote start stuff, maybe you'd better off taking it to an alarm place where they might remove it for a fee. I'm an electronic tech and know my way around that stuff. If you were from around here, I'd give you a hand. It's a matter of just finding the aftermarket brain and start removing everything that's associated with it. Connectors and crimpers will be needed thou.
Someone ripped the pages out of the manual for programming the remotes, but I took it to the dealership and they couldn't do it either. I did however unplug the remote start harness from the module so it's de-activated. I guess I'll probably take it to the dealership I bought it from to see if they can replace the module or get it to work somehow.
Rydah,i Would Advise U To Go Have It Done By A Pro....look What We Talkin About...i Used The Prestige On My Explorer...loved It..cost Me Bout 2 Bills..rem-start And Alarm..i Think You Might Want To Look At The Ones That Let You Take Your Key Out And Leave Your Engine Running...u Know..if You Want To Run Into The Store For Milk Or Something...without Having To Restart ...
Thanks King. I'm definately not trying to install one myself. I installed one on my old frontier, but it was only an alarm with no power locks or anything. It wasn't complicated at all. I'll stick to radio installation though. I'm taking it back to my dealership to see if they will at least get my remotes to work, but I think I'll buy the Prestige later this summer. I have seen a lot of people on here recommend it so I'm guessing it must be a nice system.
You'll Be Ok Rydah...the Prestige I Had In My Honda And My Explorer Both Outlasted The Vehicles They Were Installed In....if My 04 Didn't Already Have An Alarm/rem-start From The Factory...it Would Be Prestige #3 For Me....i Used To Like Clifford..but They Went Under...
Clifford got bought up by DEI (Directed) who also makes Viper, Python, Hornet, Avital, etc. a few years ago.
Clifford is now on their G5 series (5th generation). Some suggest that it is no longer a "true" Clifford since it now incorporates DEI components whereas the G4 was still using "original" Clifford components even during DEI's ownership.
As someone else stated...installation is very important regardless of brand or model.
Yes Mattias, You Are Correct....i Have A Few Friends Who Had Clifford But Got Rid Of Them Because They Could No Longer Use The Satellite Remote Start(via Telephone) And So On...by The Time The Got Their ...ish...together The Damage Was Already Done.....you Know What Happens When Customers Abruptly Lose Faith In A Product....it's A Wrap.......ask Firestone......
Sorry for the delay in responding. Basically what I've taken from the replies to this post is that brand isn't as important as installation. I have 2 choices in my area, local small shops or the major chains (Best Buy-Circuit City). The obvious advantages to the major chains are price and warranty, but wouldn't they also have an advantage in that they do so many of these on a regular basis. The small shop may sell a better product but will they stand behind it or even be in business when I need warranty work? I'm pricing the chains to see what they offer, I like pitting them against each other too, LOL.
