I need help identifying my engine. All the #'s I've found are about as use full as an empty gas tank. So now I'm think out of the box.
What are 'identifyers' I can use to id my engine as a Y-block? I know the original engine for my truck was a 292, I know my engine is a FORD engine and it is a V8, I know the Y-block had front and rear mounts where as mine has custom mid engine mounts. From the 1 Y-block I've seen up close I have similar exhaust manifolds, as in they direct the gasses up then out but show no sign of the crossover tube(between the radiator and intake). The intake also looks similar to what I remember. I know that standing at the radiator looking at the engine, according to the intake, cylinder #1 is at my left hand (followed by 2,3,4)and #8 is directly in front of the driver(preceeded by 5,6,7). I know I am more than likely going to check/replace the head gaskets as for the second time I have chocolate milk for my oil, either that or an extremely powerful oil pump.
The easiest identifier will be the presence of studs through the valve covers. Two per side. Look for engine casting numbers on the drivers side just above the oil filter toward the rear of the engine. record and post those and the "gang" will give you all the help you can ever ask for!
Crawl under and look at the block near the oil filter for the casting marks. Then check http://www.fairlane.nu/english/spec/...dimensions.htm for an ID.
The Y block forum here at FTE would be the best place for follow up
I've got an after market screw-on filter on the driver side of the block, it's fed from the front of the block near the crank shaft pully. I have found casting marks on the passenger side of the block, all FORD could tell me was the block was cast in the late 50's.
