'01 Powerstroke driveshaft pully is wobbling making the belt walk. It had less than 500miles when it started. It is making two different sounds when it is cold it sounds like two pieces of plastic rubbing. Then after driving with the engine warmed-up it is more like two metal ***** ratcheting. I am always worried about sounds, you can hear it at one point get to the dealer and no sound at all. Lucky for me it was still there and the service tech did not look at me like I was crazzzzy. Which I am when it comes to my big white toy.
The truck will go in on Thursday, and I will be hoping the noise stops. If not at least I will have a newer driveshaft pully, one with zero miles on it.
What causes the crank pully to wobble? They were surprised to find it still wobbling after putting on the new one. They also put a new belt on. Like I said the noise stoped but I am worried that after 500m or so the sound will come back.
I am assuming you are talking about the vibration damper (the lower pulley attached to the crankshaft). They are made in 2 pieces with a piece of rubber vulcanized in between the 2 (for the purpose of absorbing the torsional vibrations in the crankshaft). It is common for a small amount of wobble to exist. send me the serial number of your engine and I'll check our database to make sure the engine wasn't dropped or otherwise damaged at the factory. (-removed-)
I was driving home tonight and the noise is comimg back. Like I said the dealer replaced the pulley and belt. The pulley still wobbled but the noise stoped. After looking a bit closer I noticed they used belt dressing. I never needed to use dressing on a serpentine belt. I was given some great information from another member, he stated that there was no sign of damage to the engine.
So, what do I do now I got this noise on a 1000mile engine. And the 99 PSD that I traded in was in great shape...no noises :-(
I took the truck back to the dealer. They agreed the crank pulley is still not good. They also noticed the idle pulley had some belt burn on it. They are going to replace that also.
We keep an E-file on every engine we make according to serial number. If an engine gets dropped, for example, it has to be sent from where ever it is, to Major Repair. In order for that to be accomplished, a defect (engine dropped) has to be entered into the computer. Then when a repair is made, the repair also has to be entered and this information stays in the computer. But the only defect showing on your engine was a loose fuel line which was caught and repaired on the assembly line before it made a mess on the engine. It was then sent to test where it passed the first time and was sent straight to shipping. (An engine rarely gets dropped, but it has happened.)
