The wife is reporting a vinegar-like smell coming from the AC vents on 97 Explorer. I can't detect it. I read that it could possibly be a dirty/mildew saturated evaporator. Haynes manual talks about pulling the blower motor and using a spray disinfectant on the evaporator (applied through the hole that connects the blower motor to the evaporator). Auto parts store only had a treatment they want you to spray into the air intake and run through the system.
Does anyone know where the intake is? I assume it is under the cowl covers (where the wipers are) but I could not see exactly where? Do I just spray it into the general area? Is this type of treatment a waste of time or do I really need to either disinfect it myself or have a shop do it?
Anyone w/experience or advice your input is welcome.
Anything that you spray will only have a temporary effect. You must kill the source. BG Products has a chemical that is released inside the evaporator box and expands thru the evaporator fins and fill the box up and then runs out the drain. Only draw back is it is only sold at professional dealer or aftermarket shops.
Thats true what ever is sprayed in well be temp. but it"ll help, but before you do anything check you drain make sure its clean and drains good, i think your air in take is on the right side under the cowl. good luck TNT
